Anti-ageing supplements: what exactly are we buying?

A little pill that slows down time and stops it from passing is the perfect textbook sales pitch. It touches the heart of almost all humanity. If we had a few more years of energy, a sharper memory, stronger muscles and a body that could always repair itself, we would all want to do it. The World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that by 2050 the number of "pensioners" over 60 years of age will reach 2.1 billion. Healthy ageing is no longer a niche hobby secretly enjoyed by biohackers, but a real challenge that worries billions of ordinary people every day.

However, the term " anti-aging supplements " is like a convenience store where you can just throw in anything. Some simply supplement the body's nutritional deficiencies, while others directly affect mitochondria, inflammation, cell ageing or NAD+ metabolism. An other shelf is lined with appearance-oriented "anti-aging" products that proudly promise "smooth skin" with collagen, retinoids and hyaluronic acid. And for some products with the word 'longevity', evidence of this can only be traced from cells, rodents or even a small number of early human trials. This does not mean that the whole category is worthless.

Comparison is simply necessary. A useful list of longevity supplements should clearly state what was tested, for whom, in what form and at what dosages. Otherwise, plausible mechanisms might turn into fine bottles before anyone knows whether they can extend a healthy lifespan.

10 best anti-aging supplements worth buying:

1. Fisetin

It is a flavonol found in strawberries and has top animal data among natural senolytic candidates. Intermittent administration reduced markers of ageing and improved age-related damage and frailty in elderly mice. In small-scale mouse experiments, feeding at a later age prolonged both the median and the maximum age. Human clinical trials are ongoing, but these exciting longevity results are currently available in animals. What makes fisetin attractive is that it combines senolysis with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuropathways.

2. Quercetin

It can be found in onions, apples, capers, berries and tea. Generic supplements are typically investigated for vascular, inflammatory, immune and antioxidant effects. His reputation in the longevity community mostly because of D+Q studies, also known as "dasatinib + quercetin". Early preliminary human trials showed changes in aging cell markers and physical functions, but later studies have turned the picture more mixed. Lipid-based dosage forms, such as phytosomes, dramatically alter absorption rates.

3. Urolithin A

Urolithin A is produced when certain intestinal bacteria metabolise ellagitannins found in foods such as pomegranates and walnuts. Some people do not have access to this technology, which makes standardised postbiotic dosage forms attractive. In a randomised study involving 66 adults aged 65 to 90 years, taking 1,000 mg daily for four months improved muscle endurance and several mitochondrial biomarkers. However, when comparing long walking distance and ATP production, there was no significant difference between the group and the placebo group. It is an important difference that the marketing summaries of trading companies are often blurred.

4. NAD+/NMN

NAD+ is a key player in energy metabolism, DNA repair and cellular stress responses. Although NMN and NR reliably raise levels of NAD+-related metabolites in many human studies, results on health indicators such as muscle strength, blood glucose control and vascular function have been hit or miss. Biochemist Charles Brenner puts it well: "I'm not going to go out of my way to argue that NR is a long-life drug." The NAD+ precursor moves to the desired pathway. Whether it means longer human life or healthier life is another matter.

5. Ecdysterone

It is a plant ecdysteroid known mainly for its muscle and performance benefits. A 2019 human exercise study found significant increases in muscle mass and bench press performance, but questions remain about the product's content and reproducibility. The value of healthy ageing is actually circulation. Maintaining muscles, strength and physical function as we age is very important. So even though it comes up in the discussions as a potential muscle candidate, it still hasn't been given a pass-through rating of "proven to prolong life".

6. Epicatechin derived from natural cocoa extract

Cocoa flavanols are important backbones of NO signaling and vascular function, and among them epicatechin is in the spotlight. The COSMOS study involved 21,442 elderly adults and tested 500 mg of cocoa flavanols, including 80 mg of epicatechins. Although there was no significant reduction in the primary cardiovascular outcome, the secondary analysis showed a reduction in cardiovascular mortality. Standardized chocolate eliminates the sugar and calorie burden of eating large quantities of regular chocolate to get the same flavanols.

7. Vitamin D

Vitamin D supplement is somewhere between basic nutrition and marketing for longevity. It supports skeletal and muscle biology, but levels generally decrease as we age due to limited exposure to sunlight. The VITAL study, which involved 25,871 adults taking 2,000 IU per day, failed to reduce primary aggressive cancer or any significant cardiovascular outcome. The true value of vitamin D lies in correcting vitamin D deficiency and cannot be used as an all-encompassing anti-ageing drug.

8. Coenzyme Q10

CoQ10 plays a role in electron transport in mitochondria and is always present in energy-consuming structures. In the Q-SYMBIO study of 420 subjects, it was reported that adding 300 mg daily to normal heart failure therapy reduced major cardiovascular events over two years. This is disease-specific evidence, and it does not guarantee that healthy adults will live longer if they take it. Still, CoQ10 has a much stronger human evidence base than many mitochondrial preparations. Ubiquinol and lipid-based formulations may further improve absorption.

9. Resveratrol

Became famous for headlines about sirtuins, the biology of calorie restriction and red wine. Insulin sensitivity, vascular function, cognition and exercise adaptation have been tested in human studies, with results varying depending on the population and treatment programme. So far, it is more of a useful research molecule than a fully resolved answer to longevity. Micronized and lipid-enhanced products are being tried as solutions to a perennial stumbling block in resveratrol research: rapid metabolism.

10. Curcumin

Curcumin can affect inflammation, antioxidants and cell signaling pathways, but regular turmeric extract is the worst in terms of absorption. Depending on the combination of piperine, phytosomes and micellar preparations, the blood concentration may appear completely different. It has been extensively studied for joint symptoms, metabolic markers and inflammatory symptoms, which makes it stand out from the list of potential anti-aging natural supplements. But if the label only says "turmeric" without the curcuminoid content or delivery method, you're missing out on a lot of useful information.

The main families of healthy aging supplements

Senolytics (anti-ageing cell removers) work to remove 'uncontrolled old cells'. These are damaged cells that have stopped dividing but continue to perform metabolic activities and transmit inflammatory signals. Fisetin and dasatinib + quercetin are distinct stars. However, "old cells" are everywhere, and a compound that is effective in one cell type can be a disaster if it is thrown into a different battlefield.

Mitochondria and NAD+ support include urolithin A, CoQ10, NMN and nicotinamide riboside (NR). They approach the cellular power system from different directions. Urolithin A promotes mitophagy in cells, allowing them to recover and recycle damaged mitochondria. CoQ10 is busy in the electron transport chain. NMN and NR bring building bricks that are used as materials for NAD+.

The family of polyphenols and antioxidants includes quercetin, fisetin, resveratrol, curcumin and cocoa epicatechin. They do more than trap rampant free radicals. Some compounds may interfere with Nrf2, stimulate NF-kB and interact with AMPK, sirtuins, autophagy and inflammatory signals. Vitamin E also plays a role in scavenging free radicals. But don't think that throwing an antioxidant plate in your mouth will automatically prolong your life.

The other camp includes telomere-targeted products, mineral and vitamin formulations, muscle-maintaining compounds and a wider range of geroprotectors. Anti-aging products that claim to be for women or men often have more to do with branding than the biology of aging. It would be different if there was solid evidence for a particular sex, but a pink or black label alone is not evidence.

Why is the composition sometimes more important than the ingredients?

Even if two bottles contain the same ingredients, their behaviour after swallowing may be completely different. Common curcumin, quercetin, fisetin and resveratrol either have low water solubility or are metabolized as quickly as the wind. Therefore, the current market is lined with dosage forms such as phytosomes, micelles, lipid carriers, nanoparticles and liposomes. In human pharmacodynamic studies, lecithin-based quercetin phytosomes showed up to 20-fold higher exposures than conventional quercetin. In one classic small-scale study, adding only 20 mg of piperine to 2 grams of curcumin increased the measured bioavailability by 2,000%. Although we observed a 47-fold increase in the relative bioavailability of liposomal fisetin in mice, we should not be hasty in assuming that this is a fold that can be reliably replicated in humans. For this reason, the cheapest product may not give you the most cost-effective dose. Although a large number in the vial may simply represent a non-absorbable powder, a small number of ingredients suitable for the dosing system tested may result in higher exposure. Be sure to check certain active forms, standardised samples, delivery techniques and batch-specific certificates of analysis. If the front label reads "liposome" without the manufacturer providing information on composition or testing, it is just empty words.

Research dose and commercial dose are not the same thing

Established supplement brands use smaller capsules to make them easier to prepare, swallow and sell. But longevity protocols, especially intermittent senolytic experiments, use much higher doses. This gap has created a market for dubious and very high-dose products from unknown vendors and opaque foreign supply chains. "Made in USA" may serve as a reference, but it alone is not proof. Traceable brands, good manufacturing practices (cGMP), batch testing and validation by facilities such as USP and NSF speak more than a picture of the US flag. It is much more predictable and safer to buy several moderate-dose capsules from products with experience than one super-large capsule from a seller with no batch history.

Quercetin provides some context for dosing requirements. Many commercial products offer 500 mg. A small pilot human D+Q study in diabetic kidney disease used quercetin 1,000 mg and dasatinib 100 mg daily for three consecutive days. The ubiquitous claim that 1000-1500 mg is the proven senolytic threshold for quercetin alone is clearly beyond the human evidence. The study tested the combination drug plus booster, not the efficacy of quercetin alone, and did not establish a BCL-xL inhibition threshold common to commercial supplements.

What else should I keep on my shelf?

Taurine, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, spermidine, creatine, vitamin E and multivitamins are consistently mentioned as the best longevity supplements in articles. Whether it's worth it depends on what you're after. Creatine has a history of strong muscle and performance. Omega-3 research has focused primarily on cardiovascular disease and inflammation. Magnesium is an essential mineral and does not directly turn on the ageing switch. Telomere products are science fiction, but changing telomere biomarkers does not mean prolonging a healthy life.

Food extract supplements

Broccoli, garlic, berries, cocoa, onions and tea are full of compounds that support supplementation. Broccoli provides glucoraphanin, which is converted to sulforaphane in the presence of active myrosinase. Garlic contains alliin and related sulphur compounds. Berries are a colony of fisetin, quercetin, anthocyanins and ellagitannins. The added benefit of a complete diet is the thousands of molecules that interact with dietary fiber. But if you're trying to reach a normal research dose, you may have to fill that much of your day. The extracts solve the problem of quantity. If the active compound is not specified on the label, it may create a new trap. Broccoli extract 500 mg tells us that it is not comparable to products that standardize glucoraphanin and retain active myrosinase. The name of the ingredient is always just the first line of the story when you choose best aging supplements.

Anti-aging of skin and longevity of body

Mouth longevity products primarily target metabolism, inflammation, muscle, mitochondrial and cellular stress. Beauty products, on the other hand, work right next to the surface. Retinoids speed up the turnover of skin cells and promote collagen production. Hyaluronic acid attracts water like a magnet. Topical CoQ10 and resveratrol are in an antioxidant position, while oral collagen promises elasticity and moisture. A 2025 meta-analysis found that the effects of collagen lose their potency when industry funding and low-quality trials are excluded. HGH products are not recommended. They belong to the world of hormone marketing and should not be confused with the proper longevity supplement. Creams that fill wrinkles, collagen powders that change moisture, and senolytic candidates that fight against aging cells are completely different definitions of "anti-aging". Comparing these products with each other is totally irrelevant.
